Management Memo: How to Fire People

Elon Musk is going to get lots of well-deserved criticism for the way he fired people at Twitter.  For a sample of that criticism, read Michelle Singletary's column in The Washington Post, here.  That was about as bad a job as he could have done.

The right way to fire people begins by doing it face-to-face.  And never on Friday. Why?  Because it gives people the entire weekend to get the rumor mill up and running about who will be next.  Nor do you fire people before lunch.  You do it after lunch.  And then you gather those who are left and assure them that the bloodshed is over.
